Separate viscosity from performance level
SAE 15W-40 describes the oil's multigrade viscosity behavior. API CK-4 identifies a heavy-duty diesel engine oil service category. A complete purchasing requirement normally includes both, plus any OEM approval or specification required by the engine manufacturer. Matching only the viscosity can result in a product that does not meet the required performance level.
Confirm the engine population
List the engine makes, model years, emissions systems and duty cycles covered by the purchase. Mixed fleets can include newer and older engines with different requirements. Check whether the selected oil is approved for each engine and whether any legacy categories or manufacturer specifications are required. Product consolidation should follow documented compatibility, not convenience alone.
Treat drain intervals as an operating decision
Oil quality is only one part of a drain-interval decision. Engine condition, fuel quality, idle time, load, environment and oil analysis can all matter. Follow the engine manufacturer's interval and maintenance instructions. A supplier should provide current technical documentation, but should not replace the fleet's maintenance controls or laboratory analysis.
Build a commercial order around consumption
For useful pricing, include monthly or annual gallons, preferred package size, number of service locations and delivery ZIP codes. Cases may suit low-volume top-off needs, while pails, drums or totes may reduce handling for centralized maintenance operations. The best package depends on storage, dispensing equipment and actual consumption.
