Compare zinc-based and ashless hydraulic-oil formulation families without assuming that either choice is universally better or interchangeable.

The difference starts with the additive system

Many conventional anti-wear hydraulic oils use zinc-containing additives. Ashless fluids use a different additive approach without metallic zinc. Both formulation families can be engineered for demanding hydraulic service, but their performance claims, material compatibility and application fit must be checked on the exact product data sheet.

Neither formulation is a universal upgrade

An ashless product is not automatically better for every machine, and a zinc-based product is not automatically the right replacement for every existing AW oil. Equipment design, metallurgy, water exposure, environmental controls, operating temperature and required approvals can all affect the decision. Follow the equipment manufacturer's current recommendation.

Treat mixing as a compatibility question

Even when two products share the same ISO grade, their additive systems may differ. Mixing can reduce the intended performance or create deposits, filter problems or uncertainty about the final fluid. Before conversion, review compatibility, drain and flush guidance, seal considerations and the remaining volume of the previous fluid.

Document the conversion plan

Record the machine, current fluid, proposed fluid, reason for change, reservoir volume, filter plan and acceptance checks. Keep the current PDS and SDS with the maintenance record. For a multi-machine site, convert one controlled application only after the required approvals and monitoring plan are in place.
